Good afternoon and Happy World Art Day!
Lights Out! The Long History of Curfews
The word "curfew" instantly conjures images of teenagers sneaking out past their bedtime. But curfews have a much longer and more interesting history than just controlling restless youth.
Fire Prevention by Bell:
The word itself comes from the Old French "couvre-feu," which literally translates to "cover fire." In medieval times, most buildings were constructed of wood and other flammable materials. To prevent accidental fires, a bell would be rung at night, signaling people to extinguish their open flames and retire for the evening. This curfew ensured a safer slumber for everyone.
More Than Just Fire:
Curfews weren't always fire-related. Rulers sometimes used them to limit nighttime gatherings that could spark unrest.
I hope you have a fantastic week!
